Veteran LRE Volunteers Among Honorees at Legacy of Liberty Breakfast

Little did Judge Lyle Strom know when presenting awards to long-term Mock Trial regional coordinators that he would be the next person to be recognized for his service of more than 15 years to the Nebraska High School Mock Trial Project. Chief Justice Mike Heavican, Nebraska Supreme Court did the honors and cited Strom's involvement with Mock Trial since 1996, when Strom was a judge at the State Championship.

The following year he was the presiding judge for the final round of competition that was telecast from NET studios in Lincoln. Since that time, the Chief said that Judge Strom has been "hooked" on Mock Trial and has in the intervening years served as presiding judge for all except one state championship and traveled to National Mock Trial to serve as a judge, and he served as Chair of the Bar Foundation's National High School Mock Trial Committee when hosting nationals in Omaha in 2001. The Omaha event was one of the most successful in recent Mock Trial nationals history, bringing more than 1,000 students, coaches, and parent to Nebraska for the event. Even with its great success, Judge Strom had quipped that he and Doris have a pact that they will never do that again!

Judge Donna Taylor and Judge Robert Steinke received gifts of patriotic blankets for their respective service as Mock Trial regional coordinators since 1987 and 1993. It was Judge Strom who presented the pair with the gift, and Foundation Executive Director Doris Huffman explained that 15 percent of the proceeds from the blankets is directed, in each volunteer's name, toward the Wounded Warrior Project.

Judge Strom also recognized the outstanding efforts of the coaches for the 2010 V.J. and Angela Skutt High School Mock Trial Team, which one the state competition and represented Nebraska at nationals in Phoenix. Mary Meyers is the teacher coach, and Patrick Borchers and Judy Borchers are the attorney coaches. They were presented with gifts from the Foundation.

The 2011 class of Foundation Fellows were presented by Omaha attorney and Fellow Robert D. Mullin, Jr. Alexander Boyd, Creighton, and Shannon Kelly, UNL College of Law, received the Silver Quill Awards. Dean Richard Moberly from UNL and Dean Craig Dallon from Creighton presented the awards to their students.

Secretary of State John Gale told the attendees that he is pleased to be cooperating with the Bar Foundation in 2012 to create LRE activities that related to the annual theme, "Democracy and the Duty to Vote." The Secretary's office, the Nebraska Supreme Court, and the Bar Foundation will jointly sponsor Law Day and Mock Trial programs next year.
